Wine Tasting Tours

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

A good way to become an expert in wine tasting is to go on a wine tasting tour. In 2004, the movie 'Sideways' helped to popularize wine tasting tours, and more recently, the movie 'Bottle Shock' is the story of how California wines became popular throughout the world. These days, wine tours continue to gain in popularity.

There was a time years ago when only elite members of society were interested in wine tasting tours. However, these tours are now popluar with just about everyone. Whether you want to learn about different types of wines or you're already a wine lover, you'll have a great time on a wine country wine tasting tour.

If you're new to wine tasting tours, be prepared for various activities. Tours fall into two categories: one is an organized through a wine tour company and the second one is a tour you organize for yourself and your group.

If you're going to organize your own tour, you'll need to know what you're up against. If you're traveling by car you'll need to determine which wineries you want to visit ahead of time, which may be a difficult task if there are dozens of wineries in the wine country region you're visiting.

Start by searching the internet for wine tasting tours for the wine country region your interested in visiting. If you're coming in from out of town, you'll have to make arrangements for travel and accomadations in the wine region. Online, you should be able to determine which are the best wineries to visit, so you'll need to organize an itinerary so you don't get lost driving around the region or spend too much time traveling between wineries.

However, if this is your first time doing a wine tasting tour, it's recommended you join a wine tasting tour organized by professionals. That way, all the activities will have been planned for you each day. During the organized tour, you can make notes of the different activities available so you'll know what to do when you're organizing your own tour in the future.

Vineyards are located in different areas througout the region so your tour should last for an entire day. The tour usually starts early in the morning since much of your time is spent driving from one vineyard to the next.

Vineyards provide 4 - 6 oz. of wine as samplers. Having 1 oz. of wine is actually enough to taste the wine and if you've tasted all the wines at each vineyard you visit, it's going to add up -- so be careful if you're driving or have a designated driver in your group who isn't participating in the wine tasting.

Group tours are going to cost more than traveling on your own but the advantage is that everything is already orgainzed. If you still want to do your own tour, private companies are available who can help you out with your wine tasting tour. An organizer of private tours can map out an itinerary for you plus make the reservations and handle other tasks. This type of wine tasting tour usually costs under $100 per person.

Wine tours continue to be very popular. Whether you choose an organized tour, or head out on your own, what really matters is that you and your group have a good time and you learn something about wine and wine growing that will help you appreciate this wonderful beverage even more.
