The Right Way to Taste Wine
from: Maxx Guide to WineWine tasting is a process used to distinguish the taste of fine wines. You must be able to determine the differences between different types of wines and for expert tasters, the differences between the vintages of the same class of wine. Tasting is sometimes known as wine de gustation.
The most important part of any tasting is the 'what and how'. "What" identifies what you're looking for -- the brand and type. The "how" identifies the origin and fermentation process.
When wine tasting, you need observe the wine. Start by pouring the wine into a clean, clear glass and spend a few minutes to observe at the color. Of course, the color of white wine isn't "white", but actually yellow, green or brown. Red wines are a pale red or dark brown color. Red wines taste better as they age, but white wines get stale with aging.
Next, is the wine's aroma. Take a good whiff to provide an impression of what to expect from the wine when you taste it. Note the aroma -- is it fresh or foul? Does it smell like wine. Think about the smell before tasting.
The first step when tasting is to take a small sip, which allows your mouth to get a quick preview and some expectations. Only after the sip approval do you take a mouth full and swish.
Swishing provides a better full taste of the flavor of the wine. During swishing you will determine whether the wine is bitter, salty or sweet. If you have a severe cold, it will affect your taste buds and tasting under in this condition will make the taste appear different.
The final step is to either spit or swallow the wine. If you're only sampling one of two or three wines, swallowing is appropriate. However, if you're going to sample 5 or 6 wines, spitting is usually best, otherwise, each wine will start to taste funny due to all the different brands and you could get drunk as well.
Tasting reveals other pertinent nuances about the wine you're sampling. You should be able to identify whether the flavor is derived from an aging barrel or oak chips. You can also determine the sweetness or bitterness.
Wine tasters follow a few general guidelines and rules to judge how great a wine is. These techniques help you get the most from your wine if you follow them and know how to bring out the taste.
The true test is whether you liked the wine. Tasting wine has a few protocols, but what's most important is to enjoy yourself.
