Basics of Wine Tasting
from: Maxx Guide to WineIf you're planning to attend your first wine tasting event, but you don't know much about wine tasting techniques, here's a few basic tips to help prevent any confusion you might have.
Wine tasting events are truly fun experiences with people trying to taste wines their own way without really knowing the correct wine tasting procedures. Tasting wine isn't about drinking wine, but learning how to really fully experience the wine including its taste, texture and aroma.
Wine has a unique taste when compared to other beverages. Its taste is complex and rich so you really need to fully taste it. Wine tasting isn't just putting wine in your mouth and swirling it around, but requires some time so you can identify the wine and experience its true flavor. Thus, the essence of wine tasting is understanding the true flavor of the wine.
Every wine has a different flavor. The wine's age has an effect on the taste, which is why older wines are more expensive.
Taste and quality of the wine depends largely on the quality of the raw materials used -- the grapes. The soil in each wine producing region is unique to that region and has different amounts of minerals and rainfall, which also contributes to the taste of the wine produced.
Even simple differences in the taste of a grape results in a lot of difference in the taste of the final wine produced. In addition, since each process of making wine will vary in each region of the world, this also contributes to the taste of the wine.
The point is, you need to take some time when tasting and smelling the wine. Don't just swirl it in your mouth and then spit it out but spend a few moments savoring the wine to truly capture the flavor by first seeing it, then smelling it, and finally tasting it.
After tasting the wine as much you can, wash out your mouth using room temperature water or unsalted biscuits to remove the previous wine flavor from your mouth.
Tasting as many wines as you can will help improve your palate so you know which type of wine suits your taste buds. In addition, you'll become more experienced at wine tasting so the next time you enjoy a wine tasting event, you'll know what to do and can impress others with your knowledge about wines.
