Storing Wine the Right Way

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

If you've set aside a few bottles of wine you don't plan to drink for a few months or so, then you'll certainly need some understanding about how to store these wines, whether in a wine rack or wine cellar. Wine storage is critically important if you don't want to be disappointed when you finally open those bottles.

This is even more important if you've accumulated a large number of wines you don't plan to consume at one time. The main threats to wines are too much light, heat or vibrations.

Heat will often cook the wine and age them faster. Wide swings in temperature can also quickly spoil wine considerably. Too much vibration has basically the same effect because it brings in energy to the wine. Since light is another type of energy, it can greatly set off certain breakdown responses in wines, causing detrimental results to the final product.

Thus, reducing the amount of energy you bring into the wines will be the most effective way to maintain its lifespan and quality. This is the reason for the wine storage or cellars and the caves which are utilized by many wineries for aging their winese. Caves are used for wine storage because they're dark and can be kept at a consistantly cool temperature.

Therefore, you should keep an area of your home free from vibrations and that remains fairly cool. This area must also have a temperature that doesn't change significantly, and doesn't receive a lot of bright lights.

Setting up suitable wine storage for your wine collection will eliminate the possiblity that your valued collection will be ruined. You should also place your wine bottles on their sides so the corks stay wet at all times. This is an easy precaution to carry out and definitely worth the effort.

You don't need a complete wine cellar if you just occassionally enjoy a glass of wine, but you should still provide your wine proper storage. Wine storage doesn't have to cost a lot, but the dollars you do spend will provide the best tasting wine.
