How to Buy a Wine Rack

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Some people take the collecting and storage of wine very, very seriously, to the point where it becomes much more than a hobby.

Wine connoisseurs are fully aware that proper storage is critically important to any wine's taste. After it's bottled, wine continues to mature and gain body and flavor. Thus, proper storage and care must be taken with wine, or you could lose its potential for greatness. One of the main techniques for keeping wine well preserved practised by discriminating connoisseurs is to purchase a proper wine rack.

Buying a Wine Rack

Wine racks are made from a number of different materials and shaped into many styles. Consider which material and style works best for you first, including wood, glass, alloy or metal racks. You may want to choose a material that matches the decor of your living room or kitchen. With so much variety of styles you should have no trouble finding one that suits your lifestyle. Styles range from counter top racks, diamond bins, cabinets and several others.

A good wine rack ensure that light, humidity, temperature and stability are carefully controlled. You need to make sure your wine isn't exposed to light, moisture, extreme temperatures or vibrations.

Cabinet wine racks should do the job of keeping wine bottles safe and can best emulate the conditions of a wine cellar, including maintianing moderate humidity, cool temperatures plus a little light.

Controlling humidity is necessary to prevent the wine cork from accumulating moisture. Maintaining the correct humidity or appropriate moisture keeps the cork damp, helping to reduce the possiblitiy of contamination and/or oxidization. Warm conditions accelerate wine aging, so keep this in mind when determining the best wine rack.

Never place wine cellars above or near refrigerators since refrigerators generate heat that could spoil your wine collection. Installing a good wine rack isn't going to do much good if this happens. Your rack must be smooth to prevent the wine bottles, when placed and removed, from being scratched and damaged. Bottles and labels are important elements that will help determine the value of your wine.

It's nice to have a wine cellar, but one isn't necessary for storing wine in the proper environment. Wine racks function in a simlar manner as a wine cellar, but they're smaller as well as more accessible and, of course, they're less expensive and easier to install.

You should also be aware that ultraviolet light can affect and even spoil wine, which is why wine cellars are so dark and why wine needs to be kept in a dark, safe area. Also remeber to store your wine bottles sideways to ensures the wine is always in contact with the cork so it stays moist.

Again, it's important to emphasize maintaining the right conditions for your wine so it matures nicely. Any wine rack system must maintain the right amount of humidity and temperature. Wine is a product you can keep for a long time, so keep your wine racks pumping a temperature range of 55-60 degrees F. Humidity should be in the 50% to 75% range and adjust according to the needs of your specific wine collection.
