A Few Important Wine Making Tips
from: Maxx Guide to WineNow that you've decided to make your own wine, it's important to do it properly so you can produce some really great tasting, quality wine. You should start by doing some research to learn the basics of this wonderful hobby, because there are some fundamental tasks you'll need to perform if what you're striving for is an end product you'll be proud to serve your family and friends.
An important part of wine making is to ensure the equipment you use is sanitized -- not just clean -- but totally free of bacteria. To do this, you should purchase some special solutions which are easily available. It's smart to become obsessed with the cleanliness of your wine making operation so you don't slow down the fermentation process.
If you're just starting out, make sure you obtain a good recipe and then follow it exactly. The internet, of course, is a great place to search for recipes since there are many good sites dedicated to the art of wine making.
One piece of equipment you'll need is called a hydrometer, which aren't expensive. A hydrometer is used to measure the progress of the fermentation process. You can also use it to help determine the alcohol content by taking a reading at the start of fermentation, and then taking another one at the end.
It's absolutely essential for you to use a thermometer and maintain the correct temperature in the room where you're fermenting the wine. If the temperature is too high, it will ferment too quickly and you'll likely end up with poor tasting wine, plus you'll run the risk of bacteria growth.
On the other hand, if the temperature is too low, your wine will take too long to ferment and may not ferment at all. The correct temperature is in the range of 70 - 75 degrees.
Finally, during the wine making process you must ensure your wine isn't exposed to too much air, since this will cause oxidization which discolors the wine and gives it an odd flavor.
