Pinot Noir: A Unique Wine Gift
from: Maxx Guide to WineFor a unique gift of wine, consider giving a fine Pinot Noir on your next gift occasion. Pinot Noir may not be as well known or popular as other wines, but it has many fine qualities making it a nice chage-of-pace gift for any wine enthusiast.
Pinot Noir is a more difficult grape varietal to grow, since it's less hardy than other popular varietals such as chardonnay, and can be spoiled by disease or climate changes, making it more difficult to develop a wine of consistent quality.
Pinot Noir achives it's best flavor when cultivated in cooler climates with little variation in temperatures. Originally developed in the Burgundy wine region of France, it's been more difficult gaining popularity in other regions of the world. Recent advances in technology plus scientific research have improved the original varietal making it more feasible for growers then it was in the past.
Much care is required during the wine making process when developing a fine Pinot Noir wine. This grape is delicate during growing seaspm as well as in the consistency of results. The grape's naturally fragile flavors are easily overpowered if the wrong wood is used for the aging barrels or by introducing the wrong additives to the process. Batches are often blended to produce a better tasting wine when imperfections happen during the processing.
In general, Pinot Noir grapes produce a light to medium-bodied wine with very silky tannins, which results in a light hued red wine ranging from cherry to plum in tone. These are very aromatic wines with notes of berry, violets, cherry and spices often observed in the wine. The aging process can add earthier dimensions, as well.
Very fine Pinot Noirs can now be purchased as a wine gift choice, many of which come from areas in the U.S. where the climate has helped the country become a major producer of Pinot Noir grapes. The most prestigious of the American Pinot Noirs come from California and Oregon where the climates are uniquely suited to this varietal.
Pinot Noir is an appropriate gift for wine lover since it has such a wide array of subtle flavors among the various vintages. Thus, it's quite suitable for matching with a broad selection of foods, such as salmon, which is an ideal pairing with Pinot Noir. The flavor of the wine and the fish are both light and delicately complex, allowing each to complement the other quite nicely.
However, Pinot Noir also matches well with many other foods. Most meats work with a Pinot Noir including lamb, beef and pork. The wine also goes well with creamy sauces. Just don't serve Pinot Noir with highly seasoned or spicy foods since its delicate flavors are easily overwhelmed.
Pinot Noir is an underrated red wine that still makes an excellent wine gift choice for your wine loving friends.
