Consider a Wine Tasting Kit as a Special Gift

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Wine enthusiasts love to take wine tours for the opportunity to enjoy and taste a variety of different types of wines. Thus, it isn't surprising there's been an increase in wine tasting parties everywhere. Did you know there are now wine tasting kits available? So why not consider this special gift for your wine drinking recipient.

Wine tasting kits are also a great way to help a novice wine enthusiast a chance to try out many different wines as well as learn about the qualities of each wine. Various wine tasting kits are available depending on the types of wine you want to taste. You'll discover there are differences between red and white wine tasting kits, but each one comes with the wine bottles and accessories required.

You can also purchase kits for multiple tasters. These include up to eight glasses so everyone can enjoy and share the experience. If fact, a wine tasting kit is a great way to put on your own wine tasting party.

The actual wine tasting process is considered an art since it's more complicated than just drinking a glass of wine. You must utilize your senses of sight and smell in addition to your sense of taste. Wine tasting should never be rushed; each sip must be lingered over and savored.

To properly use a wine tasting kit, your wine glass should be clear with a rim turned slightly inward to allow you to see the color and clarity of the wine. The special rim concentrates the aroma and bouquet of the wine and prevents it from spilling when swirled.

If you hold the bowl of the wine glass, you allow the heat of your hand to warm the wine, so always hold the stem of the glass if you want to really experience the truest flavors. Start with a small amount of wine, no more than about an inch in the bowl.

If you're tasting several wines throughout the evening, start with the lighter wines and then move to the more complex wines. This ensures your taste buds stay sensitive to all the delicate nuances of each wine. Then take a sip of water between tastings in order to cleanse your palate. This leaves a clean slate for the next wine.

There are good reasons why experts swirl their glasses by their noses and have that mysterious look on their faces. When wine is held up to the light, you'll see the color and clarity of the wine. White and red wines have color variations as they age and clarity is desirable.

The swirling of the wine isn't only for making the experts look smart. Swirling the wine gently for a few seconds allows the wine to become aerated, which releases the fullness of the wine's bouquet. If you have a sensitive enough nose, you'll actually be able to distinguish several of the individual elements of the wine.

Once you've completed the first steps, you proceed to the tasting stage. Take a sip of the wine and swirl it around a bit in your mouth to warm it. Then savor the many flavors that explode on your tongue. If you'll be tasting several wines, it's okay in wine tasting etiquette to spit out the wine rather than swallowing.
