Guide to Planning a Wine Country Vacation

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Wine country vacations continue to increase in popularity, especially with wine lovers everywhere. A wine country tour provides the opportunity to sample many varieties of fine wines, along with learning more about the history and production of wine.

Planning a wine country vacation starts with choosing your destination. There are several popular wine country region, California being the first area most wine enthusiasts consider. However, more areas in the United States are now referred to as wine country, including the Finger Lakes area of New York State as well as wineries in Washington state including the Yakima Valley and Columbia Gorge regions.

Once you've determined a destination, travel plans can be made, which should be done well in advance of your intended travel dates. This includes airline reservations, car rental reservations, or mapping out a road trip if you're planning to travel to the area in your own car. Planning ahead is important, especially for long distance travelers since the biggest cost of a wine country vacation is usually travel to and from your destination.

In addition to travel arrangements to the wine country region of your choice, you'll also have to arrange overnight accommodation. Each region will provide a number of different options, including vacation resorts, hotels and bed and breakfast inns. Most of these options are located within a reasonable distance from the heart of wine country. If you'd like a nice "at home" atmosphere, a bed and breakfast inn is a great choice. In addition, many of the larger wineries and vineyards have onsite overnight accomodations for visitors.

Deciding what you want to do and see during your wine country vacation can be determined by doing some research online. Wine tours and wine tasting are, of course, the highlight of any wine country trip. You'll find that wine tasting and wine tours are combined activities, especially if you take a guided tour.

Regarding guided tours, be sure to determine your options ahead of time since many tours have limited reservations. However, if you're planning to visit the wineries and vineyards on your own, your online research will help you determine which locations open their doors to tourists along with their admission costs and wine tasting prices.

You'll want to have enough funds avaialble to really enjoy your trip to wine country to the fullest. Since wine tours are such an important part of a wine vacation, make sure you have the enough funds to cover the cost. In addition, many wineries and vineyards are known for their amazing gift shops, most of which are onsite, so you're going to want to have extra money to stock up on gifts such as wine country gift baskets, for friends back home as well as souvenirs for yourself.

Planning a wine country vacation requires several important steps. Making travel and accomodation arrangements well in advance along with doing your research about guided tours and the vineyards and wineries you want to visit will ensure your trip to wine country will be a most memorable vacation.
