Finding the Perfect Wine Refrigerator

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Comparing a home refrigerator to a wine refrigerator wil show some apparent differences. Food refrigereator are usually kept well below 50 degrees fahrenheit, which is much too cold for a wine refrigerator. Wine needs to be stored at about 55 degrees.

Another difference is that food refrigerators are opened many times throughout the day. However, opening a wine refrigerator many times every day would make it difficult for the refrigerator to maintain the correct temperature.

Wine Refrigerator Size

If you're wondering how large a wine refrigerator you should purchase, you several models and choices at your disposal. There are wine refrigerators that hold 6 bottles and others that can hold 20 or more bottles. Six bottle models sit easily on your counter top, but you'll require some floor space for larger models.

An advantage of a larger wine refrigerator is their individual cooling compartments, which allows you to place red, white or rose in the wine refrigerator providing each type with its own section.

Wine Refrigerator Temperature

Proper storage of your wine is critical to the wine you pour into your glass. If it's too warm, the wine will age too fast; too cold is just as harmful because the cold temperature doesn't allow the natural aging process to continue. Different wines require different temperature tolerances.

If you enjoy blush, rose or dry white wines -- even light red wines, then the temperature dial should be set between 40 and 52 degrees. However, you shouldn't put champagne or other sparkling wines in a wine refrigerator. The storage temperature for full-bodied wine should be in the 52 to 60 degree range. The right temperature in your wine refrigerators will maintain a much better end product.

The Difference between a Wine Cellar and a Wine Refrigerator

The basic difference comes down to how much wine you can store. Of course, a wine cellar holds more bottles and it's going to be more expensive to have since it can take up a lot of space in your house. Wine cellar rooms are usually in the basement which receives litte light and essentially acts like a large refrigerator with different "temperature zones" for the different wines you're storing.

While being able to have a wine cellar is certainly attractive to wine enthusiasts, deep pockets are required, since they're much more expensive to maintain than even a high quaility wine refrigerator.

Where to Find a Wine Refrigerator

Finding the perfect a wine refrigerator can be a difficult task, but it needn't be. There are lots of shops online you can check out including a specific manufacturer's web site.

Offline, you can visit home improvement stores and appliance dealers. But compare prices when looking to purchase a good wine refrigerator. Do some research about the different models, along with their features and benefits so you don't end up with a model you either can't afford or one with features you don't really need.
