Wine Accessories You Can't Live Without

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Wine has become more than just an enjoyable alcoholic beverage, but for many, it's become a way of life. Thus, many wine accessories are available for those who take wine seriously. From essential items, such as wine glasses and corkscrews, to less necessary, but fun accessories including decanters, ice buckets and pourers -- you'll realize there's much more to enjoying wine than consuming it.

Corkscrews & Openers: Despite the many varieties of corkscrews available, they're all used for the same basic task. You simply screw one end of your corkscrew into the center of the wine's cork, and use the handle to lift the cork from the bottle.

There are also other styles of wine bottle openers that uses cartridges to "pop" the cork out of the bottle. This style of opener is usually more expensive than traditional corkscrews, but maintaining your image is important when it comes to wine, and a specialty type of opener is the perfect accessory for your dinner party or restaurant.

Decanters: Wine decanters are glass bottles designed with a special shape to help heighten a wine's flavor when storing your open wine. They also enhance the presentation of your wine when placed on a table.

Decanters are available in may different shapes and styles, many resembling a glass flower vase. Specific types of wines need to be placed in specific shapes of wine decanters to enhance the flavor to its fullest. Others wines can be stored in any type of elegant decanter.

Some decanters have glass ball stoppers placed on the opening of the bottle to keep the freshness in when the wine is stored. Air usually has a damaging effect on the properties of wine, so it's best to keep open wine in an airtight container. In addition, some decanters can remove sediments from older wine and aerate younger wines, which further enhance their flavors.

Decanters aren't necessary for drinking wine since you can just place the cork back in your bottle of a wine to keep the air out, but they make a nicer presentation and actually aid the overall flavor of the wine.

Wine Racks: Most people tend to store their wine bottles in one of their kitchen cabinets until they want to use them. Some people may even store their wine in the basement. However, if you regularly drink wine, you'll likely appreciate having an elegant and functional wine rack located in your kitchen or dining room. These wine rack are designed to display and store all your wine bottles, glasses and accessories.

There are wine racks that can be mounted on overhead cabinet space, so the bottles are placed lying down inside them, and the wine glasses hang from their stems. This design is great for kitchens with enough space beneath their overhead cabinets. You can also purchase wine racks that sit directly on the counter and hold the bottles where they're easily accessible.

Stand alone wine racks are availabe and often have small base units, sometimes refrigerated, along with space for glasses and accessories. These types do require more floor space, but are a great way to dress up your dining space.
