The Proper Way to Use Your Wine Glass

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Wine glasses have three parts -- the foot, stem and bowl. To really enjoy your wine, it's essential to choose a specific type of wine glass for a certain kind of wine, since the shape of a wine glass considerably affects the wine's perception.

Of course, wine glasses are used for drinking and tasting wines, but proper use of a wine glass is one of the important areas of cuisine etiquettes. What's much neglected regarding the correct use of a wine glass is the stem. The proper way to drink wine from a wine glass is to hold the stem, then drink, not just for social or elegance sake but, scientifically, holding a wine glass this way matters the wine temperature.

The temperature of the wine plays a favorable role in the overall taste of your wine, which isn't affected if you use the correct way of holding your wine glass, since the stem of the glass isn't in direct contact with the wine. The temperature is more difficult to control if you grasp the glass by its bowl since it's directly in contact with the beverage.

The shape of a wine glass has an important role since this concentrates the aroma and flavor of the wine. The glass' shape also straights the wine in the best spot in your mouth from its varietal. The stem of a wine glass is also important because it provides the drinker a way to grasp the glass without causing the wine to warm up. Using the stem also prevents fingerprint markings on the glass, making the glass easier to twirl.

There are three types of wine glasses -- champagne flutes, glasses for white wine and glasses for red wine.

Red wine glasses have a wider and rounder bowl, which gives the beverage a passage to breathe. This design also allows wine to quickly cool after it's been hand contacted and warmed by the drinker. These glasses have two styles: bordeaux glass and burgundy glass.

Glasses for white wine are narrower and have tulip-shaped or straight sides. This narrowness allows a chilled white wine to maintain its temperature. Champagne wine glasses are tall, with a narrow bowl on the top. This design helps sparkling wines remain desirable when consumed.

The ISO standardized some wine tasting glasses, which are stemmed in shape with tapered, elongated bowls, and a capacity of 410, 300, 210 or 120 milliliters.
