from: Maxx Guide To Wine

Yes, there definitely are health benefits if you drink red wine. In addition, wine is a refreshing drink, so much so, many people find themselves enjoying everything about wine and even learn the process of making their own red wine.

The key to the health a benefit of red wine is presence of antioxidants, also known as Flavonoids. These flavonoids help reduce the low density lipoprotein or LDL production, also known as 'bad' cholesterol.

Red wine also plays a major role in increasing the production of HDL (high density lipoprotein) or what is known as 'good' cholesterol, in the body. The combined effects of this reduction of LDL and increase in HDL help prevent blood clots and enhancement in the overall lipid profile.

In additiion, red wine is a great source of phytochemicals, which are biologically active compounds found in plants. Polyphenols are the phytochemicals found in red wine.

Red wine contains two major polyphenols -- catechins and resveratrol, both of which are antioxidants. Antioxidants help reduce oxidative damage in the body, which is caused by oxygen free radicals. Free radicals attack molecules by capturing electrons and thereafter transforming chemical structures.

Some researchers also claim that drinking wine promotes good cardiovascular health and facilitates normal cell growth and healthy aging due to the presence of resveratrol. Catechin plays a significant role in minimizing the risk of heart disease. Saponin is another antioxidant found in red wine that also provides optimum protection to the heart and is easily absorbed by the body.

However, there are health benefits of red wine which aren't limited to the cardiovascular. Studies have proved that resveratrol present in the red wine can facilitate a reduction in the growth of cancerous tumors. This antioxidant also contains properties that may be helpful in nerve cell formation and can help with treating some neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

With so many health benefits of drinking red wine, too many people may indulge in too much drinking. However, drinking in moderation will only provide these health benefits. Too much red wine could have an adverse effect on the body. You could suffer from obesity, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, cholesterol and stroke by over indulging, so be careful.

Moderate consumption of red wine allows you to enjoy the health benefits. This means consuming no more than one to two glasses per day for men and one glass a day for women.

Now, if you feel you can abstain from drinking red wine during the week and then consume a lots on the weekend, you're absolutely taking the wrong approach. Doing this is actually unhealthy.

So, drink red wine in moderation. It really is a healthy choice. Just don't over do it.
