Does Red Wine Help Make Your Heart Healthy?

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Does red wine actually help the human body prevent heart disease? There have been a number of studies on the benefits of regular consumtion of red wine. Researchers have concluded that moderate intake of red wine actually does decreases the dangers of heart attack -- especially for middle age people. They suggest women have one glass of red wine each day while men can have two.

It's also been suggested that alcohol, such as red wine, reduces the chance of more heart attacks if a person has already had one. Other studies show that red wine can increase the forming of HDL cholesterol -- the good one -- and thwart LDL cholesterol -- the bad one.

In addition, red wine helps to prevent blood clots and decreases the damage of blood vessels rooted from heavy fat deposits. Indeed, studies have realized that inhabitants in the Mediterranean region who regularly consume red wine have reduced incidents of several heart diseases.

Red wine is produced using black or red grapes, but its red color is imparted by maceration, which is a wine making process that takes place during fermentation. In this method, during the fermentation process, the skin of the fruit is left together with the juice.

There are several main varieties of red wine including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah or Shiraz, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Other varieties include Grenache or Garnacha, Barbera, Carmenere, Malbec, Sangiovese and Touriga Nacional.

Red wines are most often served with meals rather than consumed by themselves. The bold characteristics and flavors stand up and usually complement flavorful foods. Red wine also shines when served at the proper temperature. If served cold, the subtle texture and flavor can be lost. If it's too warm, the wine may taste flat and non-refreshing. It's best to serve the beverage at normal room temperature, where the coolness exceeds the warmness a bit.

Due to red wine's antioxidant phenolics flavonoid, red wines are food for your heart. The resveratrol element found in the seeds and skins of the grapes raises the level of HDL cholesterol and it also helps avoid blood clotting. Flavonoids, meanwhile, displays antioxidant properties that plaques create in arteries.

Even though red wines have a positive effect on the heart, it isn't a good idea to drink too much wine, as with any alcoholic beverage. Alcohol increases triglycerides or bad lipids that could result in weight gain due to the empty calories.
