Howell Mountain Wineries at Napa Valley

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

In Napa Valley, Howell Mountain is the location of many outstanding wines, with Cabernet Sauvignon the most popular. This superb region is easily passed by since it's located off Highway 29, so keep an eye out and be sure to visit.

Cornerstone Cellars: Mountain wines have been produced by Cornerstone Cellars since 1991. Founders David Sloas and Michael Dragutsy were previously doctors from Tennessee before moving to Napa Valley region.

Lail Vineyards: The winemaking family of Robin Lail can trace their roots back in Napa Valley a 100 years. Robin's great great uncle, Gustave Niebaum was an owner of Inglenook while her father, John Daniel Jr., was also an owner of Inglenook.

Lamborn Family Vineyard: Established in 1971, this winery produces only a small portion of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chateau Woltner: This ghost winery has now been refurbished and is again operational. The property was originally established during the late 19th century.

Spence Vineyards: For many years, Spence Vineyards only produced homemade, non-commercial wines until it started offering an inaugural 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage to the public.

Robert Craig Wine Cellars: Grapes from three distinct vineyards produce their award winning Cabernet wines.

Summit Lake Vineyards: This winery is well known for their mountain grown Zinfandel. In addition, they produce a port style Zinfandel and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

White Cottage Ranch: White Cottage Ranch is located in the northeastern hills where only a small port of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Sangiovese and Zinfandel blend are produced, all of which are handcrafted.

La Jota Vineyard: This vineyar was originally established late in the 19th century by Frederick Hess. After Prohibition ended, the property was purchased by Bill and Joan Smith and painstakingly revitalized. The property is now owned by Jess Jackson.

Bravante Vineyards: Wines from Bravante are truly remarkable due to the extraordinary amount of care given to the grapes at the Bravante Vineyards.

Ladera Vineyards: Two mountain Cabernet Sauvignons are produced at Ladera Vineyards.

Viader: Established in 1989, Viader specializes in a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Howell at the Moon: A relatively new winery in the area, but definitely worth visiting. Their first vintage was produced in 2004.

O'Shaughessy Estate Winery: O'Shaughnessy Estate was established in the hills of Napa Valley in 1996. The red volcanic soils of the area have helped their venture to become quite successful.

Black Sears Vineyard: Only a small amount of Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are produced by the acclaimed Black Sears winery.

Atalon Winery: Grapes from all over the Valley are sourced by Atalon Winery. The winery focus is on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although the wines from this winery are produced in limited quantities, the prices are usually quite moderate.

DR Stephens Estate: This 35 acre estate produces Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes that originate from the Cavernos AVA in Napa Valley.

Retro Cellars: Retro Cellars is mainly about Petite Sirah. Grapes from the Muscatine Vineyard on Howell Mountain are used to produce the wine.
