Getting the Best Wine Values

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Have you ever become annoyed at having to pay too much for your favorite bottle of wine? Getting yourself a good deal on wine is no different than getting a good deal on any other product. In fact, it's truly satisfying to know you've discovered an excellent wine value.

Obtaining good value when purchasing wine is more than finding the cheapest brand available. Remember, simply spending less money doesn't assure you'll feel any of the satisfaction you'd feel by getting a good, open deal on a quality wine. If this were so, everyone would simply purchase the cheapest wine all the time but, of course, this doesn't happen.

However, some would argue there are wine-snobs who always prefer a brand if the price is exorbitant. This may be true for a few who determine which wines they buy based on the cost rather than the wine's value. A more expensive wine doesn't always mean more value, since other factors need to considered in addition to price.

In order to find true wine value, you have to consider the overall picture. You don't necessarily want to purchase the cheapest brand even though you'll discover decent quality in these cheaper brands. In addition, you won't always find the best quality by purchasing a high-priced brand. The balance, of course, is getting the most for the amount you do spend.

So, what is the finest quality product available for the most reasonable cost? You may pay a little more than the bottom-shelf brand, but you're likely going to appreciate this selection because of its superior quality. You'll also appreciate knowing your snobby friend paid almost twice as much for the same quality varietals found in your economically-sound purchase.

Experimenting with different brands and price points is an excellent way to determine what you feel is good value in the wines you purchase. Rather than automatically purchasing the more expensive Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon, consider a Pinot Blanc or a Pinot Noir instead. You'll be pleasantly surprised when trying these less popular varietals because they could lead you to great discoveries.

Also, consider trying wines from different regions as well. Australia and New Zealand boast wonderful wines for a reasonable price and check out a local winery, too. Chances are you'll uncover some treasures locally. You can also choose to purchase wine by the case since wineries often give a discount when you buy in bulk.

Regardless, determining the best wine values is subjective in nature. You may prefer the simple boxed wine many others avoid. How much you enjoy the wine you purchase is the primary way to determine value.
