A Simple Recipe for Homemade Strawberry Wine

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

If you're looking for something different in the taste of wine, and you have the facilities to make some yourself, consider using strawberries for your next wine making project. Strawberry wine is one of the most delicate and exquisite wines you can make at home.

If you're planning to make strawberry wine, do plan in advance, especially if you want to serve it for a special occasion since strawberry wines require aging for at least one year.

The winemaking processn starts with gathering together your ingredients, which includes seven pounds of whole, freshly picked strawberries. Wash and hull the fruit and then boil 2 galloons of water. Additional ingrediants include lemon juice and 5 pounds of sugar.

Next, mash the strawberry fruits in a large crock or casserole dish and then cover the mashed strawberries with boiled water. Add lemon juice and stir the mixture quickly for about two minutes. Set this aside, covering everything with a linen cloth. Place the crock in a dark, cool space, and procede to stir the mixture everyday for the next week.

In a weeks time, purify the mixture through a double layered cheesecloth and strain into a large bowl, totally discarding the strawberry pulp. Mix the strawberry liquid and sugar, constantly stirring until the sugar dissolves. Pour this mixture into a container and let it stand for another week, making sure to stir everthing every day.

At the end of the second week, pour the strawberry juice into a gallon glass wine bottle, loosely corked. Let the bottle rest in a dark, cool place for about three months. When you notice the wine is no longer bubbling, and is perfectly clear, pour it into individual wine bottles, cork the bottles and let them age for a year.

Once the aging process is complete, you'll be able to serve a delicious tasting homemade strawberry wine. This recipe should yield about 40 servings or two galloons.

Strawberry wines can vary. You can choose to taste it semi sweet, lightly sweet, completely sweet or sour.

Strawberries are excellent fruits for your health. They have a low amount of calories and fats, and are rich in fiber, folate, antioxidants, potassium and vitamin C. When compared to bananas, oranges and apples, strawberries are on top regarding nutrient content.
