Popular White Wines

from: Maxx Guide to Wine

Red wines are popular in part due to their antioxidant and heart-protecting elements. However, other less noticed wines are popular as well. For many, white wine is divine due to its subtle aroma and taste and the right amount of sweetness.

It's understandable that many people get confused regarding wine, especially white wine. Here's a brief list of the most common types of white wine:

1. Chardonnay: This is the most popular type of white wine and certainly deserving of its title. Chardonnay originated in France from grapes of the same name. Its flavor has the fruity tastes of pineapple, peach, citrus, and apple along with the luscious tang of vanilla, oatmeal, and nuts. Chardonnay looks very elegant in a glass due to its deep yellow to light greenish transparence.

2. Sauvignon Blanc: Another wine from France, particularly in the Loire Valley region, Sauvignon Blanc is also found in New Zealand. Its flavor evokes freshness such as the aroma of freshly cut grass, giving the wine an herbaceous flavor with hints of fruits. It's recommended you enjoy this wine immediately since its fresh flavor doesn't last long.

3. Chenin Blanc: Another product of the Loire Valley region, this exceptional wine is often unnoticed and has become an underdog in the wine community. However, Chennin Blanc's flavors are magnificent with hints of tangy pineapple and lime combined with the sweetness of honey and licorice. In addition, it lasts longer and can keep up to 10 years.

4. Gewurztraminer: comes from Alsace, France and has a louder character, with hints of spice and floral taste.

5. Pinot Gris: is a crisp and smoky wine with hints of apricot and comes from Alsace, North Eastern Italy and New Zealand.

6. Riesling: is a noble tea-like, honey flavored wine which comes from Alsace or Clare Valley in France or from Germany.

There are many other kinds of white wines, all evoke elegance and luscious flavors, making them perfect with soft cheeses, white sauced pasta, fish and poultry, or just a glass by itself if you prefer.

White wines, for many, definitely compete with reds. When choosing wine from a restaurant's wine list, your goal is to determine a suitable pairing with your meal. If the foods ordered are too different to generalize with one wine, ordering by the glass may be best.
